The Danger of Over-Driven Nails: Why Compressor Pressure Matters
Modern roofing relies almost entirely on pneumatic nail guns. These tools allow a skilled crew to install a roof efficiently and quickly. However, a nail gun is only as good as the technician operating the air compressor. One of the most severe installation errors in the roofing industry is incorrect PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) settings, leading to over-driven or under-driven nails.
The Science of Over-Driven Nails
An asphalt shingle relies on the large, flat head of the roofing nail to hold it securely to the plywood deck. If the air compressor pressure is set too high, the nail gun will drive the nail straight through the shingle. The nail head punches a small hole in the fiberglass matting and embeds itself too deeply. As a result, the shingle is no longer secured by the nail head; it is merely resting on the thin shank of the nail.
When the first major coastal gale sweeps through Chesapeake, those over-driven shingles will easily tear through the remaining asphalt and blow away, completely voiding your 130 MPH wind warranty.
Under-Driven Nails and "Pops"
Conversely, if the air pressure is too low, the nail head will sit slightly above the surface of the shingle. When the next row of shingles is laid over it, that raised nail head will slowly push its way through the top shingle as the roof heats up and expands in the summer. This is called a "nail pop," and it creates an immediate access point for rainwater to leak into your attic. Proper installation requires daily calibration of compressor PSI to ensure every nail head sits perfectly flush with the shingle surface.

Flashing Against Stucco: Preventing Hidden Wall Rot
While vinyl siding and brick are incredibly common in Virginia, stucco exteriors offer a premium, Mediterranean aesthetic to many luxury homes. However, from a roofing perspective, stucco is one of the most difficult materials to work with. The new step flashing and counter-flashing are then tucked behind the barrier, allowing water that penetrates the stucco to safely weep out over the top of the flashing. It is a labor-intensive process, but it is the only way to guarantee a watertight seal.

When Does Your Plywood Roof Deck Actually Need to Be Replaced?
A common fear for homeowners undergoing a roof replacement is receiving a phone call from their contractor mid-job stating that the entire wooden roof deck needs to be replaced. While replacing a few soft sheets of plywood is standard practice, a full structural decking replacement adds thousands of dollars to the final bill. Understanding the building codes and physical signs of failure can help you avoid unnecessary upcharges.
Code Requirements for Thickness
If you live in an older Virginia home (built prior to the 1970s), your roof deck might be constructed of "space decking"—individual 1x6 planks of wood with gaps between them. Originally designed for cedar shake roofs, this type of decking cannot legally support modern asphalt shingles, as the nails require a solid surface.
