Installing a skylight is an excellent way to bathe your interior spaces in natural light, but cutting a massive hole in your roof deck requires impeccable waterproofing. The interface between the asphalt shingles and the skylight frame is protected by a metal flashing kit. Depending on the brand and model of your skylight, your roofing contractor will use either step flashing or continuous flashing—and understanding the difference is vital for long-term leak prevention.
The Step Flashing Method
Most modern, deck-mounted skylights utilize a step flashing kit. This consists of several L-shaped metal brackets that are woven individually between each course of asphalt shingles as they run up the sides of the skylight. This "stepped" method ensures that any water running down the side of the skylight is immediately kicked out onto the top of the shingle below it. Because each piece can move independently, step flashing perfectly accommodates the natural expansion and contraction of the roof deck without buckling.
Continuous Flashing Vulnerabilities
Older or lower-end curb-mounted skylights sometimes use continuous flashing—a single, long piece of L-channel metal running the entire length of the skylight. While it is faster to install, it is far more rigid. Over time, as the house settles and the roof undergoes severe temperature swings, continuous flashing can warp or pull away from the curb. When a gap forms along a continuous run, water can easily track underneath it and rot the underlying wood. If you are replacing a roof with existing skylights, upgrading to a modern step-flashed kit is highly recommended.

The Truth About Roof Overhangs and Attic Intake Vents
When discussing attic ventilation, homeowners frequently fixate on the exhaust system—usually the ridge vent or powered attic fans. However, an exhaust vent cannot push hot air out if it cannot pull cool air in. The entire thermodynamic cycle of your roof relies on the intake vents, which are heavily dependent on the architectural design of your roof's overhangs (the eaves).
The Soffit Dilemma
Ideally, a home features wide eaves that extend 12 to 24 inches past the exterior walls. The underside of these eaves is called the soffit. Without a soffit, there is nowhere to install traditional intake vents. To solve this, contractors must install specialized "drip-edge vents" or low-profile "fascia vents" to artificially create intake airflow at the very bottom edge of the roof.

To prevent this, the Virginia building code strictly dictates exactly how OSB and plywood decking must be fastened to the underlying framing in high-wind zones.
The 8d Ring-Shank Requirement
In the past, roof decks were often attached using standard smooth-shank framing nails or heavy staples. Under extreme aerodynamic lift, these smooth fasteners could easily pull straight out of the wood. Today, codes require the use of 8d (eight-penny) "ring-shank" nails. These specialized nails feature aggressive ridges along the shaft. When driven into a wooden rafter, the wood fibers lock tightly into these rings, making the nail virtually impossible to pull out through brute force alone.
The 6-Inch Fastening Schedule
In addition to using the correct nail, contractors must adhere to a strict nailing schedule.
